OBITUARY: Elizabeth “Bette” Ann (Hourihan) Mangano, 88

WILMINGTON, MA — Elizabeth A. Mangano (Hourihan), fondly known as Bette to her family and friends, passed away unexpectedly on May 2, 2023, at home surrounded by her immediate family.

Bette was born on July 6, 1934, in Somerville, MA.  She was the dear daughter of the late John L. and Margaret V. (Riley) Hourihan.  Bette was raised in the “Silver Lake” section of Wilmington and often helped out at the family store Tattersalls; which was a Wilmington landmark.  Bette attended Wilmington public schools and was a graduate of Wilmington High School with the Class of 1952.

Bette married her husband Bob Mangano in 1957; the couple bought their home in Tewksbury where they raised four wonderful children.  Bette was very devoted to her family; she enjoyed cooking for everyone and she was always available to lend a hand when needed.  Bette was a talented seamstress who could fix or sew anything; she created beautiful clothes and many gifts for family throughout the years.  Bette was very proud of her family and all of their accomplishments.

In her spare time, Bette was known to be an avid reader.

Bette will be fondly remembered as a quiet lady, very humble and kind.  She was very devoted to those she loved and will forever live on in their hearts.

Bette was the beloved wife of Bob Mangano, devoted mother of the late Michael Mangano and his wife Mary Lou of Westerly, Rhode Island, John Mangano and his wife Darlene of Tewksbury, Jim Mangano and his wife Maria of Wilmington, and Christine Lowenstein and her husband John of Winchester.  She was the loving ‘Grammie” of Jeff and his wife Robbin, Katie, Dominic, Samuel, Matthew, Andrew, William, James, Harry, and her great-grandchildren Isla and Jack.  Dear sister of the late Peggy Gorman and her late husband John and the late John Hourihan and his late wife Sally.  Bette is survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.

Family and friends will gather for a Mass of Christian Burial for Bette on Monday, May 8th at 10:00 a.m. in St. Dorothy’s Church, Main Street (Rte. 38) Wilmington, MA.  Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, MA.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Bette’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN  38105.
