Wilmington Public Schools To Hold 10 Summer Enrichment Courses For Grades 6-12 This Summer: Robotics, CAD, Computer Programming & More!

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Public Schools is excited to offer the following enrichment courses for summer 2023!

Introduction to FTC Robotics
Dates: July 17-July 21
Times: 9:00-12:00
Grades: Entering 7-12
Cost: $225
Description: In this 5 day workshop students learn to think like engineers. They will collaborate to design, build, and code a robot. Within their teams they will build a basic push bot and code the robot using block programming. This is a great opportunity to be introduced to the field of robotics.

Experienced FTC Robotics
Dates: July 17-July 21
Times: 9:00-12:00
Grades: Entering 7-12
Cost: $225
Description: In this 5 day workshop students who have some experience with Robotics to continue thinking like engineers. They will collaborate to design, build, and code a robot. Within their teams they will build a push bot with some unique features and code the robot using block programming. This is a great opportunity to continue expanding their knowledge of robotics.

Introduction to Computer Aided Design (CAD)
Dates: July 24-27
Times: 9:00-11:00
Grades: Entering 7-12
Cost: $150
Description: Students will learn how to design and create 3D objects within the TinkerCAD software. Students will also learn how to operate the “Flashforge Creator Pro 3D Printer.” Then, they will be able to print their designs on the 3D printer.

Intro to Programming
Dates: July 17, 18,1 9, 20
Times: 9:00-10:30
Grades: Entering 6-12
Cost: $100
Description: This introductory class will teach students the basics of programming in JavaScript in a fun visual learning environment. Students will learn to use functions and control structures by writing basic programs, solving puzzles, and creating music. We will start in a block-based coding environment, but students can move to text-based coding as they become more comfortable.

Summer Book Club
Dates: July 7, 14, 21, 28
Times: 8:30-10:00
Grades: Entering 6-12
Cost: $100
Description: This course will offer help in reading your summer reading book—whether it is required or optional—and the work that goes along with it. We can discuss the reading along the way for a clear understanding of it before you enter the new school year this fall.

Spicing Up Your College Essay
Dates: July 24-27
Times: 9:00-11:00
Grades: Entering 11-12
Cost: $120
Description: Students will learn creative writing techniques to help set their college essays apart from the crowd. We will first focus on choosing the best topic to meet the needs of the college essay while staying unique, interesting, and true to you. Then we will explore some of the best and most interesting openings to grab the reader. We will read some examples and analyze the best creative writing techniques used. Students will then practice various creative writing techniques. Students will leave this course with at least the beginnings of a college essay. We will be focusing on the creative element of the college essay, but not on the revision and editing processes.

Kitchen Basics From Scratch
Dates: July 10-13
Times: 9:00-11:00
Grades: Entering 6-12
Cost: $160
Description: Learn the basics of cooking from scratch! We will go over important kitchen skills and safety at the start of each class (food safety/cleaning up, knife skills, mise en place, the chemistry behind baking). Then students will watch the instructor go through each step of the cooking/baking process while the students cook alongside in groups of 3-5. Once we’re done, of course we will taste the results! *Please note: Students MUST share all food allergies with the instructor ahead of time so that other options can be prepared, if necessary. Students with food allergies MUST bring an EpiPen each day.

Beginner Yoga
Dates: July 18, 20, 25, 27
Times: 9:00-10:00
Grades: Entering 7-12
Cost: $80
Description: Beginner Yoga focuses on breathing, strength and flexibility at a slower pace. This class is geared to those new to yoga or prefer a gentler practice. This class is taught by Paula Simpson, PE Teacher at the Middle School and 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher.

Vinyasa Yoga
Dates: July 18, 20, 25, 27
Times: 10:00-11:00
Grades: Entering 7-12
Cost: $80
Description: Vinyasa Yoga combines movement and breathing to maximize the flow of energy through various poses. Yoga can enhance your health and fitness by improving muscular endurance, strength and flexibility. This class is taught by Paula Simpson, PE Teacher at the Middle School and 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher.

The Mathematics of Knitting
Dates: July 17-20
Times: 10:30-Noon
Grades: Entering 6-12
Cost: $120
Description: This class will expose students to math concepts such as base two number systems, modular arithmetic, and Möbius strips all while learning the basics of knitting in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Students will learn both the knit and the purl stitch as well how to knit in the round. Students will take home an infinity scarf at the end of class. Materials included.
