Below is a press release from The Public Health Museum, located on the grounds of the Tewksbury State Hospital:
TEWKSBURY, MA — The Public Health Museum in Massachusetts is welcoming families and children for specially priced tours during the February vacation week. The museum is offering three special tour times for its indoor museum tour and two special times for its outdoor campus tour.
“We are excited to share the history of public health students,” said Dr. Al DeMaria, the museum’s president and former state epidemiologist.
Adults are $5 and students are free on February 23rd. Tours are recommended for ages 10 and up.
The museum has been featured on WCVB’s Chronicle and CBS news It Happened Here.
Through original artifacts, memorabilia, and archival materials, the museum explores the history of public health in America and the story of Tewksbury Hospital, one of the first public health hospitals in the country. Started as an almshouse in 1854, the hospital was home for a short time to Anne Sullivan, Helen Keller’s teacher.
Museum exhibits include Infectious Diseases, Patent Medicines, Food Safety and Pasteurization, early Mental Health, Nursing/Education, and early Dentistry. Well preserved WPA art posters and murals frame the museum’s walls. The museum also features an iron lung; a lifesaving machine for those stricken with polio.
The museum hosts schools, university students, public health professionals, and the general public for tours through its galleries, and serves as a resource to the community with online content and programming. The museum partners with libraries and senior centers to bring its programs to the community in person and online.
Tours are by reservation. Please visit the museum sign up for dates and times at https://bit.ly/3myD75o.
