Wilmington Police Chief Joseph Desmond Issues Statement On Death Of Tyre Nichols

Below is a statement from Wilmington Police Chief Joseph Desmond on the death of Tyre Nichols:

On behalf of the employees of the Wilmington Police Department, I would like to address the death of Tyre Nichols. By now, many of you have seen the many videos of the incident.

Simply put, there is no place in policing for this type of brutality. It is important that all of us who wear the uniform let the citizens of our communities know that this is the antithesis of our core values of compassion, commitment and respect.

Policing can be very stressful and often times force may be necessary. I believe the training of our officers is among the best in the state. Strict guidelines on the use of force are adhered to and strong de-escalation tactics are frequently updated. Every year, our Department’s Training Division files a statistical use of force report to help us see trends and make improvements. Transparency is essential.

But training is only one component. The most important key is the character of people that wear the badge. The officers that serve you are among some of the finest professionals I know.

On behalf of all of us, we send our condolences to the family of Tyre Nichols. We also want to assure you, the citizens of Wilmington, that we will continue to be committed to tirelessly set a culture in Wilmington Police Department that puts compassion and respect as our top priorities.
