WILMINGTON, MA — Stephen Russell Catalano Sr, 70, died Thursday September 22, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by his loving family. He was a caring, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and coach.
Stephen was born on May 22, 1952, to Americo “Rico” and Alice “Vicki” Catalano, in Somerville Ma. Stephen, who grew up in Wilmington Ma was part of the Wilmington High School Hockey, Football and Baseball Teams and was the “Freshman” Hockey Captain for four years, “A record that will never be broken.” Stephen married his high school sweetheart Linda (Valente) Catalano and built a beautiful family with their daughter and four sons.
Stephen was a hardworking, dedicated man who established two of his own companies in construction and auto mechanics. He had a love and passion for hockey, Nascar, music (The Beatles), his dogs, woodworking, street rods, camping and most importantly coaching. There was no other place that he would rather be than at an ice rink with his children, grandchildren, and coaching the hundreds of youth hockey players. “A good Coach can change a Game. A great Coach can change a life.” Steve was a coach that was admired and loved by all and changed the life of many.
Stephen was known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor. Only the people who truly knew him, knew if he was joking or serious, but even then sometimes they couldn’t tell. Stephen’s family and friends will cherish their memories of happy times together with him.
Stephen was the beloved husband of Linda Catalano, devoted father of Tara Whiting & her husband Kevin of Derry, NH, Stephen Catalano, Jr. & his wife Sarah of Buxton, ME, Derek Catalano of Epsom, NH, Peter Catalano of Atkinson, NH, and Darren Catalano & his wife Christina of Chester, NH. He was the loving grandfather of Tyler, Lindsey, Drew, Nicholas, Kaitlyn, Gwendolyn, Andrew, Cameron, Joey, and Luca, dear brother of Bob Stewart & his wife Krys, Robert Catalano & his wife Wanda, Linda Catalano & her husband Greg Mihilidis, Rico Catalano & his wife Charlene, and Elena Turgeon & her husband Dennis. He was the special son-in-law of Jean & the late Frank Valente, brother- in-law of Frank & Cheryl Valente, Alexander & Gemma Valente, Daniel & Susan Valente, Pamela Valente, Michael Valente, and Charlie & Michele Valente. Stephen is further survived by his “furry family” Zita, Zoie and Zuri, his many nieces and nephews and their families as well as many friends.
Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA, on Tuesday, September 27th from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. immediately followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m.
