NOW HIRING: Town Seeks A Part-Time Public Health Nurse

WILMINGTON, MA — The Town of Wilmington is currently hiring a Part-Time Public Health Nurse. The job posting can be found below:

HEALTH DEPARTMENT
PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE
Unit: Non-Union Status: Exempt
Reporting To: Health Director
Base Wages: PT 9-1-$38.98/hour
Hours: 20 hours per week

Definition
Works under the general supervision of the Public Health Director. Performs detailed, complicated duties requiring continuous judgment in applying or demonstrating nursing skills and techniques in homes, clinics, schools and throughout the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Provides nursing services relating to immunization clinics (e.g., influenza, covid, pneumococcal, hepatitis B vaccinations, etc.).
• Carries out monthly screening programs (e.g., blood pressure, tuberculosis, etc.) at designated sites, most importantly the senior center.
• Works with School nurses to implement disease control measures in the schools.
• Maintains communicable disease surveillance in town, to include collaboration with healthcare providers, follow up on disease reports, enforcement of quarantine and isolation regulations. Reports infectious diseases to the State Department of Public Health.
• Manage cases of tuberculosis, including administration of medications under physician’s orders, supervision of medication, and assist in the identification and hospitalization of patients where necessary.
• Works with State and local health officials to implement disease control measures and immunization programs and ensure compliance with related health regulations that pertain to pandemics and public health emergencies.
• Assists residents in gaining access to health services from public or private health providers and develops community health outreach programs as needed.
• Maintains relationships with local health providers to gather information on local health issues and develop cooperative programs.
• Works with Health Department to trace and control outbreaks of foodborne illness.
• Works with the Health Department in emergency planning efforts including planning for pandemics and emergency events and oversight of community medical and non-medical reserve corp.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Licensed as a registered professional nurse in Massachusetts. Two years of public health nursing experience or three years of general nursing experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Considerable knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice. Knowledge of community needs and resources and of the divisions of responsibility among professional agencies and community groups as it relates to public health. Ability to evaluate and appraise individual and group health needs and problems. Interviewing, teaching, counseling, and assessment skills, especially in relation to senior services. Must be proficient in computers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Minimal to moderate physical effort required in performing duties under typical school, office, and community conditions. Potential exposure to chemicals, airborne particles, communicable diseases, and biohazards, consistent with the work environments described above. Frequently required to stand and walk over various surfaces. Ability to utilize and operate medical and office equipment. Normal vision is required for the position. Ability to sit, stand, reach, walk and hear. May be required to carry, lift, or assist in an emergency.
