Wilmington Elderly Services Director Terri Marciello Provides Update On New Senior Center Project (June 2022)

Below is an update from Wilmington Elderly Services Director Terri Marciello, published in the Senior Center’s latest Buzzell Buzz newsletter:

WILMINGTON, MA — Here’s what has been happening since our last Update in the May Newsletter:

The Chair of the Senior Center Building Committee, George Hooper, gave a report at the Annual Town Meeting on April 30, 2022, on the activities of the Committee over the past year.

The Committee met on May 11, 2022, at the Town Hall with the architect from Dietz and Co. The programming needs and building layout were reviewed. The consensus of the Committee members was that the layout of the spaces was satisfactory. There was discussion of the building exterior. Some members expressed concern that the entrance needs to be more prominent and make a statement. The architect will look at potential modifications.

The architect presented options for the building exterior materials. For the siding, combinations of brick, fieldstone, cedar and fiber cement were discussed but a final decision was not made. Roofing options include asphalt shingles and standing seam metal roof. Window options include aluminum, wood and fiberglass. Further discussion will take place at future meetings before any decisions are made on these options.

On Wednesday, June 8, 2022, beginning at 5pm, the Senior Center will have an open house allowing residents to come in to:

  • Explore the current building
  • Study the progress made on the new Senior Center design
  • Speak to those involved in the project.
  • Discuss the project with fellow residents

Then, at 6pm, the Senior Center Building Committee will convene in the same location for a meeting. The public is encouraged to attend and engage in public comment. Topics for that meeting will include site survey analysis, civil design and structural design.

As we get more into the details of the building and what it will look like, it is important to stay engaged. This is your Senior Center. Let’s make it what you want.
