OBITUARY: Dorothy May Irwin, 93

WILMINGTON, MA — Dorothy May Irwin (Weatherbee), “Dottie”, age 93, a long-time resident of Wilmington, MA, passed away peacefully, with her family at her side on May 29, 2022.

Dottie was born in Cambridge, MA, on April 27, 1929; she was the cherished daughter of the late Basil and Emily (Clarke) Weatherbee. Dottie lived in Cambridge as a young girl before moving with her family to their home on West Street in Wilmington. Dottie attended Wilmington Schools and was quite an athlete; she was a graduate of Wilmington High School Class of 1946 where she was a basketball standout and known as “dead eye Dot”.

Dot married “her sweetheart” William Irwin on April 16, 1949, at the Congregational Church in Wilmington. Dottie and Bill settled in the Glendale Circle neighborhood in Wilmington which proved to be a great place to raise their family, the neighbors watched out for each other and they were all great friends.

Dottie was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; she was always there to give guidance, support and unconditional love to her family. Dottie was always upbeat and fun; she was the “cool Mom and Nana” to her family and their friends. Dottie enjoyed having her family and friends together for any occasion; all were welcome in her home.

Prior to retiring, Dottie worked as an administrative assistant at the AVCO/Textron Company in Wilmington for many years. Dottie had a great work ethic and a vast knowledge of her job; she was outgoing and made some great friends with her co-workers throughout the years.

Throughout her life, Dottie remained very active; she looked forward to playing golf, tennis and heading out to lunch with “her gals”. Dottie loved to travel but her “happy place” was at Lake Winnipesaukee surrounded by her family and a nice Chardonnay.

Dottie was proud to be a member of the Loon Preservation Society in Moultonboro, NH and volunteered to help in any way she could.

Dottie will be fondly remembered as a terrific lady; she was kind, friendly, outgoing, upbeat and fun. Dottie had an endearing personality, a great sense of humor and a warm smile that could light a room. Dottie made an impact on everyone she met throughout her life and she will forever remain in the hearts of those she loved.

Dottie was the beloved wife of the late William Irwin, Loving mother to Gary Irwin and wife Mary of Lodi CA, William Irwin and wife Jay of Wilmington, MA, David Irwin and wife Patti of Essex, MA, Gail Holloway and husband Jack of Wilmington, MA, Sally Peabody and husband Stephen of Andover, MA, Barbara Casey and husband Mark of Palermo, ME and Robert Irwin and wife Laurie of Billerica. Devoted Nana of Gary Irwin, Jr. & wife Carolina, Chelsea Irwin, Brittany Irwin, Keith Irwin & wife Jennifer, Craig Irwin & wife Whitney, Laura Irwin, Thomas Irwin & wife Kimberly, Hayley Irwin, Janel Smith & husband Mort, Jacqui Bento & husband Dan, William Holloway, Katie Holloway, Dennis Torpey & wife Michelle, Dan Torpey & wife Shawna, Kelly Silva & husband David, Allison Ponunski & husband Alex, Erin Lemnios & husband Jon, Marissa Irwin, Emily Irwin, Matthew Irwin and great-grandchildren Matthew, Sara, William, Gavin, Luke, Juniper, Henry, Braden, Nadia, Jack, Leo, Will, Hunter , Brooklyn, Aidan, Isla, Roan, Everly, Anna, Nora, Andrew, and Madison. Dear sister of the late William Weatherbee, the late Louise Smith, the late Don Weatherbee, Beatrice Randall of New Hampshire, and Robert Weatherbee of Florida. Dottie is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Family and friends will gather for a Funeral Service at the Wilmington United Methodist Church, 87 Church St., Wilmington, MA, on Tuesday, June 7th at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, MA.
