OBITUARY: Matthew “Matt” Kmon, Sr., 82

WILMINGTON, MA — Matthew Martin Kmon, Sr. “Matt”, age 82, of Methuen, MA, formerly a long-time resident of Wilmington, MA, passed away peacefully at home in Methuen, on May 9, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.

Matt was born in Ware, MA, on May 22, 1939; he was the cherished only child of the late Matthew and Catherine (Mucha) Kmon. Matt was raised and educated in Ware and was a graduate of Ware High School, with the Class of 1957.

Matt enlisted in the United States Air Force on November 22, 1957; he proudly served overseas during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged from active duty on February 9, 1961. Matt continued to serve the country in the Air Force Reserves until November of 1963.

Following his honorable discharge, Matt went on to continue his education at Boston State College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology. Matt started a long and rewarding career in the Laboratory at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford 47 years ago and was the Laboratory director for 37 years prior to his retirement.

Matt married the “love of his life” Josephine “Jojo” Ficociello on May 21, 1960; the couple settled in Wilmington in 1963. Matt and Jojo raised two wonderful children, Matthew Jr. and Paula; Matt was a very devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather; his family was “his world”. Matt and Jojo along with their family and friends shared many wonderful times together before her untimely passing in August of 2004.

Matt was also very active in his community where he coached Wilmington Little League and Youth Baseball for many years. Matt loved the kids he coached, he treated them as his own and he was a great mentor to many. Matt, along with his wife Jojo were also very active at Austin Prep. School in Reading where they served as Past Presidents of the Athletic Association.

In his free time, Matt also enjoyed fishing, and looked forward to his fly fishing trips to Maine with his son-in-law, Scott.

Matt will be fondly remembered as a wonderful guy with a great personality. He loved his family and friends unconditionally and will forever remain in their hearts.

Matt was the beloved husband of the late Josephine “Jojo” (Ficociello) Kmon, devoted father of Matthew M. Kmon, Jr. & wife Karol of Litchfield, NH, and Paula M. Sullivan & husband Scott of Methuen; loving “Papa” of Hayley Kmon & partner James McKenney, Lauryn Kmon & partner Matthew D’Ambrosio, Griffin Kmon, Ryan Sullivan & wife Ashley, Tyler Sullivan & partner Brian Isslebacher, and Devyn Fehmal & husband Matthew, great-grandfather of Sophia and Stella. Cherished son of the late Matthew and Catherine (Mucha) Kmon. Matthew is also survived by his extended family of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Friday, May 13th for Visitation from 10 a.m.-12:00 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA at 12:30 p.m. Burial with Military Honors in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Matthew’s honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
