OBITUARY: Shirley Chester, 87

MELROSE, MA — Shirley Chester of Melrose, passed away on March 6, 2022 surrounded by loving family. She was 87. Born and raised in Woburn, she also lived in Wilmington and California before settling in Melrose. She was the daughter of Joseph Tierno and Eleanor (Hayward) Tierno and was pre-deceased by her brother Nicholas Tierno and sister-in-law Judith Tierno.

Over the years, Shirley served as a Girl Scout leader and volunteered at the Wilmington Public Library and the Melrose Wakefield Hospital gift shop. She loved to travel and was fortunate to be able to fulfill her excursion wish list on tours that included Europe, Australia, Alaska and most of the National Parks. She also loved to read and was able to continue to listen to books after she became legally blind through the Perkins Library talking book program. Shirley passed on her love of travel and reading to her very grateful daughter.

Quiet, independent and deeply faithful to Jesus Christ, she lived life on her own terms and had no regrets.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Carter, and son-in-law, Dean Carter, of Fullerton, California. Family and friends who will miss her dearly include her cousin Paul Cassettari, niece Robin and her husband, David Jackson, nephew Michael and his wife, Debi Tierno, nephew Gerry Tierno, nephew Jeff Tierno, brother Joseph Tierno Jr, Rosann and Mark Guarino and Gay Rinker.

Contributions can be made in her name to Perkins School for the Blind, either online or at 175 North Beacon Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
