TOWN ELECTION UPDATE: Selectman Greg Bendel Pulls Papers To Run For Re-Election; Gwen Hupper-Lawson Pulls Paper To Run For Shawsheen Tech

WILMINGTON, MA — According to the Town Clerk’s Office, incumbent Selectman Greg Bendel recently pulled nomination papers to run for re-election in the upcoming town election, joining fellow incumbent Kevin Caira and challenger Paul Sarnowski in a race for two seats.

Newcomer Gwen Hupper-Lawson recently pulled papers to run for the Shawsheen Tech School Committee seat. The seat is currently held by longtime member Robert Peterson Sr., who has not pulled nomination papers to date.

Wilmington School Committee incumbents Jesse Fennelly and Jay Samaha remain the only two candidates in their race for three seats, with no one else — including incumbent Jo Newhouse — having pulled nomination papers yet.

Housing Authority member Stacie Murphy have taken out nomination papers to run for re-election.

Of the seven candidates who have pulled papers, only Caira and Samaha have returned their nomination papers to the Town Clerk’s Office thus far.

The following seats are up for grabs in this year’s election:

  • TWO three-year seats on the Wilmington Board of Selectmen (currently held by Greg Bendel and Kevin Caira)
  • THREE three-year seats on the Wilmington School Committee (currently held by Jo Newhouse, Jesse Fennelly, and Jason Samaha)
  • ONE three-year seat on the Shawsheen School Committee (currently held by Robert Peterson Sr.)
  • ONE five-year seat on the Wilmington Housing Authority (currently held by Stacie Murphy)

Nomination papers are available in the Wilmington Town Clerk’s Office. Papers, with at least 50 valid signatures from Wilmington voters, are due back to the Town Clerk by Friday, March 4, 2022.

The Town Clerk’s Office, located at Wilmington Town Hall, is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

The Annual Town Election will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022.  Polls will be open from 8am to 8pm.

The last day to register to vote for the Annual Town Election is Monday, April 4, 2022.
