Memorial Bench For Korean War Veteran Robert Brown To Be Installed At Silver Lake

WILMINGTON, MA — At their latest meeting, the Board of Selectmen approved the request of Director of Veterans’ Services Lou Cimaglia to install a bench long the Route 38 side of Silver Lake in honor of Wilmington veteran Robert Brown.

Brown, who passed away in August 2020 at the age of 89, was a member of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. According to his obituary, Brown served on the U. S. S. Elokomin and the U.S.S. J.P. Jones and earned several commendations including the Good Conduct Medal, European Occupational Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Navy after almost ten years of faithful service and returned home to his family. Brown was considered a “pillar of the community” upon his return home, actively involved in the Fourth of July Committee, Town’s 200th Anniversary Committee, American Legion, and Wilmington Little League.

The bench, with a plaque, will be located near three memorial stones, the new flag pole, and the Silver Lake sign. The bench and installation will not cost the town any money.

“We’ve been getting a lot of feedback about [how the area will be the bench will be placed] is becoming a little Veterans Memorial Park,” Cimaglia told the Selectmen. “Mr. Brown’s bench would be a perfect fit there.”

Cimaglia noted that when he returned from his deployment in 1991, he met Mr. Brown and some other older veterans through some veterans organizations in town.

“They took me under their wing. They showed me what Wilmington was like and got me involved in the honor guards,” remarked Cimaglia. “I knew [Mr. Brown] many years ago. His bench will be a great addition to our Veterans Memorial Park.”
