400+ Kids Enjoy Shawsheen Tech’s 2nd Annual ‘Trunk Or Treat’ Event

Below is a press release from the Shawsheen Tech:

BILLERICA, MA — A line of eager children and families wrapped around Shawsheen Valley Technical High School on Saturday, October 30th for admission to its second annual Trunk-or Treat event; the rain did not stop this festivity! Despite the weather, many trunks were creatively rearranged to tables underneath a large tent, while others kept displays in trucks and trunks equipped with canopies to ward off the rain.

It came as no surprise that interest to participate in this year’s event would be strong, as it was remarkably successful two years ago (it was not offered last year due to Covid); over 40 trunks were exhibited. The trunks were hosted by Shawsheen students, staff, families, community members, and faculty groups. Scenes like Batcave, Day of the Dead, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Under the Sea, and Welcome to the Zoo were among a few of the notable displays. Themed tables highlighted Carnivals & Clowns, Graveyards, Legos, Mario & Luigi, Monsters, Pumpkins, and Scarecrows. Additionally, two of Shawsheen’s vocational-technical programs, Cosmetology and Health Assisting, put together Halloween displays that represented their vocational programs under the spell of Halloween. Cosmetology’s table displayed a frightening site of horrifying hair styles, and Health Assisting exhibited a grizzly hospital scene featuring bloody gurneys and medical gear. Shawsheen’s National Honor Society students displayed a Sharp-Tongued Shark trunk with their advisor, and the Gender Sexuality Alliance club brought lots of color to the event with a beautiful display of rainbow fun.

Along with trunk displays, the event provided activities for all ages. Shawsheen’s Culinary Arts students baked cookies for decorating, there was a face painting station, and student volunteers were tasked to hand out cups of fresh popcorn and help “trunk-or-treaters” with crafts like making ghost lollipops.

“I was gratified by the number of responses received for participation this year, not only to decorate trunks, but to volunteer,” said Angela Caira 9th Grade Guidance Counselor and event coordinator. “The creativity, thoughtfulness, and effort that was put into each table and trunk display was phenomenal. I was especially thankful for the partnership with Bruno Brothers Plumbing & HVAC Inc., they made the event an incredible success.” Caira also noted the outstanding support received from her colleagues, students, and community, as well as members of Shawsheen’s Parent Advisory Council and School Committee.

The event was sponsored by Shawsheen Tech’s Orientation Leaders and Bruno Brothers Plumbing and HVAC Inc. (Bruno Brothers). Bruno Brothers is co-owned by Shawsheen alumni Matthew Bruno (Plumbing, 2007) and Larry Bruno (HVAC, 2006). In addition to their $1500.00 donation, Bruno Brothers provided 10 trucks with exceptionally spooky Halloween displays. Their donation, along with funds raised by Shawsheen’s Orientation Leaders, permitted more than 15,000 treats to be dispersed.

Shawsheen Tech’s Trunk-or-Treat was a triumphant success! Over 400 children attended, resulting in an astounding attendance of over 1,000 people. The event provided the community a safe way to celebrate Halloween, while also providing an outlet for students and staff to come together to serve its community.
