WILMINGTON, MA — Ruth T. (Mailett) Holbrook, age 82, a long-time resident of Wilmington, MA, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2021.
Ruth was born on September 20, 1939, in Boston, MA; she was the dear daughter of the late Joseph and Emily Maillett. Ruth was raised and educated in Stoneham, MA, she went on to graduate from St. Mary’s High School in Melrose.
Ruth married the “love of her life” Bob Holbrook on May 6, 1961; the couple shared many wonderful years together and raised a beautiful family. Ruth and Bob moved to their Kenwood Ave. neighborhood where they resided for over 50 years, raised their children and made many life-long friends with their neighbors. Ruth was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother; her home had an “open door” policy to family and friends and it was where many wonderful gatherings took place over the years. Ruth was an amazing cook, she loved to have everyone around her dinner table and was instrumental in getting everyone together for dinners, holidays and countless family events. As the years passed, her children grew and had families of their own Ruth took on a different role of Nana and Great Nana; she adored her grandchildren and treasured the times they spent together.
Ruth and Bob loved to travel and vacation with family and friends; they enjoyed seeing new places and meeting new people. When the kids were young, Ruth and Bob took them on many camping excursions, they spent time at Cape Cod where she enjoyed the beach and swimming and they traveled cross country. Ruth and Bob expanded their travels to Aruba, Ireland and Spain, where they made great friends. In later years, Ruth and Bob became snow birds to escape the harsh New England winters and enjoyed the sun, fun and beaches of New Smyrna and Bradenton, Florida.
Ruth was always giving of her time and talents to her community; she volunteered at the local Girl Scouts, at countless St. Thomas Church Fairs and for community programs. Ruth worked for more than 15 years at the Water Department for the Town; she was always so kind and gracious to the residents and her co-workers who loved her as family.
Ruth was a woman of great faith which helped her through some of the more difficult times of her illness. She was an active communicant of St. Thomas Church and she along with her husband Bob were members of the Church Choir for many years. Ruth loved music of all kinds and thoroughly enjoyed the concerts that the Choir participated in.
In her spare time Ruth enjoyed playing cards, backgammon, dancing, knitting, crocheting and following her favorite Boston sports teams. Ruth had a passion for babies and animals; she loved her pets Manoosh and Bella dearly, they were “her babies”.
Ruth will be remembered as a sweet and kind lady; she loved to help others and always greeted them with her beautiful smile. Ruth loved her family and friends with all her heart and she will forever be missed by all who loved her.
Ruth was the beloved wife of 60 years to Robert W. Holbrook, devoted mother of Ann Palmer of Lunenburg, Gary Holbrook & his wife Kathy of Chelmsford, Michelle Mugford & her husband Scott of Dracut and Steven Holbrook of Billerica. Loving “Nana” of Nick Palmer, Danny Palmer, Lauren Holbrook, Drew Holbrook, Samantha Mugford, Nathan Mugford, Jessica Jones & her husband Phil, Amanda Gagne, Gerard Gagne, and her Great-Grandchildren Riley Palmer and Kyla Jones. Cherished daughter of the late Joseph and Emily (LeBlanc) Maillett, dear sister of Joan Jordan & her late husband William Jordan and the late Richard Maillett & his wife Eva Maillett all of Stoneham. Ruth is also survived by her nieces, nephews and friends.
Family and friends gathered for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, October 9th from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, at 12:30 p.m. Interment took place in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
