5 Things To Know In Wilmington On Saturday, September 4, 2021

WILMINGTON, MA — Below are 5 things to know in Wilmington on Saturday, September 4, 2021:

#1) LIBRARY EVENT: Fiction Critique Group (Virtual)

Love writing fiction? Whether you are drafting a short story or a novel, joining our Critique Group is a great opportunity to meet other writers and get constructive feedback in a supportive environment. Open to all experience levels writing in all genres. Led by local writing enthusiast, Barbara Alevras. Meetings take place from 9:15am to 11:45am on the first Saturday morning of the month.

If you are interested in attending this event, please email Assistant Director Charlotte Wood at cwood@wilmlibrary.org. Please include the title of the program in the subject heading. This event will be held over Zoom. You will receive an invite from the presenter prior to the program date.

#2) Book Store Next Door Open

The Friends of the Wilmington Memorial Library’s Book Store Next Door (183 Middlesex Avenue) is open from 10am to 1pm (special hours). All books are $2 or less!  Every penny of every sale benefits the Wilmington Memorial Library. Learn more HERE.

#3) Wilmington Travel Basketball Tryouts Announced For 2021-2022 Season

Below is a message from Wilmington Travel Basketball:

Wilmington Travel Basketball is excited to announce our plans for tryouts for the 2021-22 season! Tryouts will be held at the Wilmington Middle School during the weeks of September 13th and September 20th. There will be two sessions for each grade. All players trying out will be required to register online before the tryout. You can register on Wilmington Travel Basketball’s website at www.wilmbtb.org.

All players are required to attend one of the two tryout sessions and it is highly recommended to attend both tryouts. If a player is unable to attend a tryout due to injury, please send an e-mail to WTB President, Joe Maiella at josephmaiella@gmail.com .

Boys and Girls teams play in competitive leagues against teams from neighboring towns and cities. The season begins in early November and ends in early March. Teams will practice 2 nights per week during that time with most games on weekends.

#4) Help The Wilmington Police Department Create A 150th Anniversary Patch

In 2022, the Wilmington Police Department will be celebrating our 150th Anniversary! To commemorate this important event, Wilmington police officers will wear a commemorative 150th anniversary patch for the entire year.

We are calling on the public to help us design an anniversary patch!

Patch design submissions, must meet the following criteria:

  • You do not need to be a Wilmington resident to participate.
  • Designs must maintain the shape of the current WPD patch.
  • Designs must be original and may not contain existing or copyrighted photos, illustrations, or renderings.
  • Designs must include “Wilmington Police Department”, “150 Years”, & “1872-2022”
  • The winning artist will receive their own 150th Anniversary Patch and will be recognized on our website, social media pages, and at public events throughout the year.
  • Patch design submissions should be emailed to Sergeant Matthew Stavro at mstavro@wpd.org with “150th Anniversary Patch” in the subject line.
  • Please include your full name, address, & phone number in the email.
  • Patch designs must be received by October 15, 2021.

#5) WCTV Seeks Stories & Testimonials From Past & Present Wilmington Relay For Life Participants

WCTV is filming a special video segment for this year’s Wilmington Relay For Life on Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 3:30pm to 11pm, at Wilmington High School.

If you are a survivor, caregiver, or a participant, please consider sharing your story with WCTV. If you are a Relay participant, we want to know why. We will be hosting quick interviews at the studio on Monday, August 30, 2021, from 5pm to 8pm, and Wednesday, September 8, 2021, from 5pm to 8pm. Contact Lisa@wctv.org to RSVP.
