VIDEO: Watch Wilmington Senior Center Building Committee Meeting — 4 Sites In Contention, 3 In The Lead For Now

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Senior Center Building Committee held its most recent meeting on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 in Room 9 of Town Hall.

Selectman Greg Bendel provided his colleagues with a summary of the meeting at the latest Board of Selectmen’s Meeting on Monday, August 16, 2021

“The Senior Center Building Committee met with Dietz & Company — the project architect — and Dan Pallotta of P3 — the Owners Project Manager, on July 27,” said Bendel. “The architect led the committee through a discussion about the space requirements and reviewed an adjacency diagram that provided a very basic layout of size and locations of rooms, including a dining/function hall, commercial kitchen, game room, arts & crafts area, fitness room and office space. The estimated size of the facility is just under 18,000 square feet. Committee members and audience members offered feedback about the layout.”

Bendel noted that — of the four locations under consideration — the Whitfield School was identified as the most constrained due to wetlands in the rear of the property and a stream that cuts across the property. Concerns were also raised about senior drivers having to enter and exit the site through significant traffic on Middlesex Avenue.

“The current Buzzell/Swain site, the Town Hall site, and the former St. Dorothy’s Church property all appear feasible for a senior center,” added Bendel.

The Senior Center Building Committee will soon meet with the Town Hall/School Administration Building Committee to discuss the criteria both groups will use to rate each sites.

“Since both projects are competing over the same sites, the idea is for two committees to reach consensus over the best location for each building,” explained Bendel.
