OBITUARY: Robert “Bob” Knight, 86

Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:

WILMINGTON, MA — Robert A. Knight, “Bob”, age 86, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2021.

Bob was born at home in Medford, MA, on November 12, 1934; he was the dear son of the late George and Alberta (Baker) Knight. Bob was one of eight siblings who were raised and educated in Medford, MA.

Bob was inducted into the United States Army on July 3, 1957; he served overseas in Germany before returning State side to Fort Dix in New Jersey. Bob was honorably discharged on July 1, 1959 and was transferred to the Army Reserves where he continued to serve the country until November of 1960.

Bob married his “sweetheart” Shirley Marie Giannone on November 20, 1955; the couple lived in Somerville for several years before moving “up country” to Wilmington more than 60 years ago. Bob and Shirley were married for 56 years, raised three wonderful children, enjoyed their grandchildren and shared many great times together with family and friends before her passing in December of 2011. Bob and Shirley enjoyed entertaining; they loved to play cards and hosted the weekly Saturday Evening Poker Games with friends. They also looked forward to the many holidays and special occasions that they spent with their families.

Bob was a hard worker; for many years he was employed as a Master Carpenter for the Carpenter’s Union Local #40; where he made many friends. In his later years, Bob worked at his own carpentry business; his talents were endless, he was meticulous and had an eye for detail. Bob’s handmade creations will be treasured by everyone who was lucky enough to receive one.

Bob also had a great talent for building and flying model airplanes; he had such a passion for this hobby. For many years, Bob, belonged to the Massachusetts 495th R/C Squadron where he had plenty of opportunity to show off his talents.

In his spare time, Bob, enjoyed tinkering around his house and yard; he was an original “Mr. Fix It” who would try his best to fix just about anything. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycles throughout the years, he had a love for old cars, and enjoyed scanning flea markets for a unique finds.

Bob will be fondly remembered for his bad “Dad Jokes”, his fierce independence, and his unconditional love for his wife, children and grandchildren; they were his pride and joy. Bob was an all around “good guy” who will forever be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bob was the beloved husband of the late Shirley M. (Giannone) Knight, the devoted father of Kenneth J. Knight of Washington, Cheryl J. Mello and her husband Barry of Allenstown, NH and Steven M. Knight and his wife Giselle of Wilton, NH. He was the loving “Papa” of Andrew Monty, Kevin Monty and his wife Holly, Jennifer Fleming and her husband Ed, Colby Knight, Charlotte Knight and his beautiful Great-granddaughter Eowyn “Wynnie” Fleming. He was the dear brother of Dottie Adamo, Gloria Jeffery, Evelyn Aloupis, the late George Knight, Jr., Gladys DeLuca, Arlene Murphy and Richard Knight. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

At Bob’s request his funeral services will be private.
