Below is a press release from Teamsters Local 25:
BOSTON, MA — Teamsters Local 25 awarded college scholarships worth $58,000 to 29 high school students during its May membership meeting.
The scholarships were presented during a stirring ceremony outside the union hall in Charlestown, which included words of inspiration from Teamsters Local 25 President Sean O’Brien and special guest Boston City Councilor Michelle Wu, the Local 25 endorsed candidate for Mayor of Boston. Teamsters Local 25 also produced a social media video tribute honoring the college-bound seniors.
Olivia Dennett, a recent Wilmington High School graduate who will attend Providence College, is among the scholarship recipients.
Olivia is the daughter of William Dennett, a Teamsters Local 25 member who worked for Massport.
“Teamsters Local 25 is proud to provide educational opportunities for the children of our members,” said O’Brien. “It’s important that we invest in our future and inspire youth to achieve. It was clear from speaking with the recipients during the ceremony that these kids are smart, engaged and hard-working. Our future looks bright and we can expect great things from the next generation.”
Since 2006, the Teamsters Local 25 Memorial Scholarship Program has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds. All students are children or grandchildren of Local 25 members or retirees. Teamsters Local 25 provides scholarships each year to children of Teamster members and retirees as a way to help the next generation of leaders achieve their academic and career goals.
Teamsters Local 25 is the largest Teamsters Union in New England, representing 12,000 workers.
