OBITUARY: Atwood E. “Dick” Dickson, Jr., 85

LEXINGTON, MA — Atwood E. “Dick” Dickson, Jr., age 85, of Lexington, died peacefully on Monday, April 26, 2021, at the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington.

Atwood was born on October 13, 1935 in Plymouth, MA. to Atwood E. Sr. and Dorothea (Pollard) Dickson. After graduating from Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, ME in 1953, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the USS Valley Forge during the Korean war. After his full-time service ended in 1960, he continued serving in the Naval Reserves for several decades until his military retirement. Upon retirement from his business career, Dick enjoyed working as a security officer. When not working you could find him fishing with his sons, taking day trips to NH and Maine with his wife, and attending annual dinner dances with his Naval Enlisted Reserves (NERA) friends.

Dick was highly active in the VFW organization and has held the Wilmington VFW Post 2458 Commander position for many years. He was also a member of the Tewksbury-Wilmington Elks, the Freemasons, and the American Legion, and was a communicant at the Wilmington United Methodist Church.

Dick was predeceased by his parents, his infant brother Bradford, and his son Atwood E., III in 2012. Dick is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Evelyn Dickson of Lexington, his son Bill, Sr. and wife Kelley of Tyngsboro, son Steven, Sr. and wife Christine of Wilmington, daughter-in-law Judy Dickson of Wilmington, stepsons Edward Roman of California, Michael Roman of Lexington, and the Dickson grandchildren Bill, Jr., Steven, Jr., Katie, Madison, and Andrew.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, May 1, at the Bellevue Cemetery, Still River Rd. (opposite 130 Still River Rd.), in Harvard, MA. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made in Dick’s honor to The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
