WILMINGTON, MA — Below are 5 things to know in Wilmington on Sunday, April 11, 2021:
#1) Wilmington Police Department Offers Autism Awareness Patches During April
Chief Joseph Desmond announced that members of the Wilmington Police Department will be donning uniforms with a special autism awareness patch during the month of April. In addition to wearing these patches to increase awareness of autism spectrum disorder, patches will be sold to benefit the The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, whose mission is to help people and families affected by autism live life to the fullest.
“We are honored to partner with and support the Flutie Foundation for the third year in a row”, stated Chief Desmond. “In addition to funding organizations that support people with autism, the foundation has helped thousands of families through financial grants, camp scholarships, and by providing tracking devices for kids who wander.”
Patches will be available at the front desk of the Wilmington Police Department to members of the public who make a $10 donation to the Flutie Foundation. This year they will also be available at AJ’s Kitchen located at 162 Lowell Street.

#2) Wilmington Senior Center Asks Members To Complete Survey To Help Plan For Reopening
This survey is a way for the Wilmington Elderly Services Department to find out what your comfort level is with returning to the center. It is very important and we would love if you could fill it out and return it to the Center. This information is for planning purposes and will remain confidential. Please complete the survey and either mail to the center, drop off in the orange bin outside the center, or call to complete the survey over the phone.

#3) Town’s Water Main Flushing Program To Begin Soon, May Cause Discolored Water
Starting in mid–April, the Water Division will begin its annual water main flushing and valve exercising program.
The flushing program will be conducted Monday through Friday, from 8pm to midnight.
The program will take approximately 8 weeks to complete.
The goal of the flushing program is to enhance the water quality throughout the Town of Wilmington. By strategically opening and closing water main valves, water is flushed through the pipes at a higher than normal velocity. Please be aware that since flushing scours and removes minerals that have accumulated in the mains, residents may experience discolored or rusty water during the program. The water is safe to drink. However, we suggest that our residents check the water before doing laundry to avoid staining clothing and other items. Running the cold water for a few minutes should clear up any discoloration.

#4) Town Hiring Silver Lake Lifeguards For 2021 Town Beach Season
The Town of Wilmington seeks talented individuals to join the summer Recreation Department team for the following positions. Employment application forms can be found on the town website at www.wilmingtonma.gov.
Silver Lake Lifeguards – approximately 25 – 35 hours per week
The Lifeguards perform lifesaving and first aid duties and ensure safety and comfort of beach patrons at all times.
The Beach would be open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm from early July to mid-August. Lifeguards must be available weekdays and weekends.
Working under the direction and supervision of the Beach Supervisor, duties include, but are not limited to: lifeguard duty; facility maintenance; and enforcement of beach rules. May also include identification checks, gate attendance and collection of gate receipts.
Qualifications at time of application: Certified Lifeguard/Lifeguard Instructor with Waterfront Safety. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age.
Hourly rate: $14.75
