Shawsheen Tech Students Create Hockey Sled For Instructor’s Son

Below is a press release from the Shawsheen Tech:

BILLERICA, MA — Last January, when Shawsheen Tech Design and Visual Communication Instructor Doug Michaud described his son’s excitement about his new hobby of sled hockey to his colleague Bob Guelli, the beauty of vocational technical education began to blossom.  As a Drafting Instructor, Bob immediately began to envision a hands-on project for his students.  While Doug described sled hockey to Bob, focusing on the sled, they both began to talk about drawing and designing a sled here at Shawsheen.  With that, a project-based learning assignment and lesson began to grow, and they were off to the races to see about creating their own sled for Doug’s son.

Doug’s son, JD, plays for “the Sledgehogs”, a youth sled hockey team playing in the Boston Metro area and managed by Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers.  With this collaborative idea growing, Doug reached out to his sons’ team and they let the school look at two different sleds. Once received, the Drafting students disassembled the sleds and reversed engineered the parts to create detailed drawings, displaying the components of the engineering project. Students utilized the current industry-recognized software and 3D solid modeling CAD package called Solidworks to create drawings to be used throughout the entire process of a design project, from conceptual design to construction and assembly.

Once the drawings were completed, Bob and Doug brought them over to the Metal Fabrication and Joining and Advanced Manufacturing Shops for their input.  They instructors and students began by developing a stock list and assigned the variety of “jobs” to each group to begin the process of manufacturing their own sled.  With the transition to remote learning in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing was halted, but not forgotten.  When Shawsheen students returned for in-person learning in September, the process picked back up and the project was re-born!

As the project progressed, a total of 5 technical areas worked collaboratively to design, manufacture, and assemble a sled for JD to try on the ice.  Students from the Drafting, Metal Fabrication and Joining, Advanced Manufacturing, Graphic Communication, and Design and Visual Communication Technical areas all contributed and brought this project to life.

On Friday, April 2, a group of the students and instructors involved headed over to the Ristuccia Memorial Arena in Wilmington to test their sled on the ice.
