FULL PROGRAMMATIC REVIEW: Steering Committee Formed To Make Major Changes To Wilmington Middle School

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington School Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand recently announced he is moving forward with his plan to create a committee to conduct a full programmatic review of the middle school.

“The Wilmington Middle School has continued its programming offerings, schedule and overall organization relatively unchanged for many years,” wrote Brand in a memo to the School Committee. “It is an important period to conduct a thorough review and analysis of the schools’ programming in light of the shifts in student enrollment, possible programmatic opportunities that could enhance the curricular experience for students, and to recommend possible changes to move the school forward in line with what is in the best interest of future middle school students in Wilmington.”

Brand is currently forming a steering committee to identify desired changes in programs, schedules and organization structures to culminate in a set of recommended that will be  presented to the Superintendent and School Committee. This steering committee will engage all of the school’s key stakeholders, including staff, parents/guardians, administrators and students.

The Committee will begin its work in early February with a first meeting scheduled for Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 3pm. The Committee will share its scope of work with the School Committee in early March. The Committee will provide an update to the School Committee, along with the Middle School staff, in early June. The Committee will make its final recommendations to the Superintendent and School Committee in early September. Any approved changes would be phased in beginning at the start of the 2022-2023 school year.

The Steering Committee will consist of 24 members, including:

  • 2 staff members from Grade 6
  • 2 staff members from Grade 7
  • 2 staff members from Grade 8
  • 2 Unified Arts staff members
  • 1 Special Education staff member
  • 2 parents from Grade 5
  • 4 parents from Grades 5-8
  • 2 students from Grades 7-8
  • 2 students from Grades 9-10
  • 3 Principals & Assistant Principals
  • 2 District/Curriculum Leaders

This Committee will meet approximately once a month on Thursday afternoons at 3pm until its work is completed.
