OBITUARY: Edward J. Moran, 85

Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:

WILMINGTON, MA — Edward J. Moran “Ed”, age 85, a long-time resident of Wilmington, formerly of Somerville, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2020 at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington.

Ed was born on October 19, 1935 in Chelsea, MA; he was the dear son of the late Walter and Margaret Moran. Ed was raised and educated in Somerville, MA., and went on to graduate from Malden Catholic High School where he was proud to play on their 1952 and 1953 basketball teams, earning MVP of the 1953 team.

Following graduation, Ed was offered a basketball scholarship to attend Boston University but felt that he wanted to serve the country and was inducted into the United States Army where he began active duty in October of 1954. Ed was proud to answer the call and served overseas as well as on the home front; he was honorably discharged from active duty in September of 1956 and continued to serve the country in the Army Reserves until October of 1962.

After his discharge from the Army, Ed enrolled in Newbury Junior College; earning an Associates Degree in Business.

Ed went to work at the the New England Telephone Company as a repairman over 45 years ago, climbing poles and working his way up the “ladder”, being an integral part of the many changes in telephone and communications industry throughout the years.

Ed married his “sweetheart” Anne McGreenery in 1962 and the couple moved to Wilmington in 1966 where they raised their five sons. Ed was a hands on dad who was very involved in sports with “his boys” who were all athletic; he was their biggest fan on the court, ice or field and in the stands cheering them on. Ed cherished his role as “Papa” to his ten grandchildren and he enjoyed every moment he spent with them, offering gum drops or treats at a moments notice. Ed loved his family dearly and always beamed with pride as he spoke of them and their accomplishments.

In his spare time Ed enjoyed watching sports on the television or attending games with his family and friends. One of the more memorable outings was when he took his father-in-law to Harvard University to attend the first Patriots Game; the two had a great time and talked about it for years.

Ed will be fondly remembered as a “great guy”; he was quiet and unassuming but had a great sense of humor. Ed was friendly towards everyone and he was a devoted family man, a great friend and a good neighbor. Ed will forever be in the hearts of those who loved him.

Ed was the beloved husband of Anne J. (McGreenery) Moran, devoted father of Michael Moran & wife Maria of Wilmington, Edward (“Ted”) Moran & wife Nicole of Newfields, NH, Dennis Moran & wife Maureen of North Andover, Tommy Moran & wife Andrea of Rockland and Timothy Moran & wife Helen of Denver, CO. Loving “Papa” of Shawn, Brian, Ryan, Kelly, Meghan, Patrick, Caitlin, Danny, Ashley and Jon. Dear son of the late Walter and Margaret (Healy) Moran and brother of the late Jack Moran.

Due to the current situation with Covid 19 and for everyone’s safety, the Moran family have decided to have a private service at this time.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Nichols Funeral Home, Wilmington.
