Below is a message from Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand sent to parents and guardians on Monday:
Dear Members of the WPS Community,
I am writing to provide you with an update on the ongoing developments related to the reopening of our school system.
Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support as much work is unfolding both at the District and school level to prepare for reopening. This remains a very fluid time as work continues to address the myriad of issues associated with this planning.
Update on Negotiations – For the past month members of the senior administrative team, along with School Committee representatives, have been meeting with the Wilmington Teachers’ Association (WTA) with joint efforts aimed at solidifying an agreement for our school reopening. We have held a total of nine meetings thus far which have been collaborative and productive. We have scheduled a number of additional meetings in the week ahead and the District is committed to establishing a plan that all parties can agree to.
Change In Date of the Next School Committee Meeting – In an effort to prioritize negotiations between the parties this week the decision has been made to reschedule the School Committee meeting that was previously scheduled for this upcoming Wednesday, September 9 to Tuesday, September 15. Given the fact that the primary agenda item was an update on the reopening efforts, the rescheduling of this meeting to allow for additional negotiation meeting time seemed the most important.
Update & New Developments – These next few days will be very important as we attend to a number of key elements connected with the reopening plans. This includes finalizing our available staffing following the recent agreement established with the WTA, reviewing the HVAC reports that have recently been received (which will be made available), and formalizing the overarching reopening agreement with the WTA. As developments unfold I want you to know that I will share relevant information with you as quickly as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Thank you to the many members of the community who submitted questions to our district email address. The response has been overwhelming with over two hundred questions submitted thus far. Every effort has been made to redirect questions specific to one individual office/department/school. Extensive efforts have gone into assembling the other questions into themes and commonly asked questions with responses generated for these. The first round of these FAQs will be posted on our reopening website no later than tomorrow.
