Congressman Seth Moulton Announces $1 Million Science Grant To Merrimack College

Below is a press release from Congressman Seth Moulton’s Office:

SALEM, MA — Last week, Representative Seth Moulton announced that the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded nearly one million dollars to Merrimack College for a project under the direction of Assistant Professor Rickey Caldwell Jr.

Too often, talented people don’t have the means or opportunity to grow their talents into great careers. Merrimack College will help more people put their talents to use and land great jobs with what they learn through the study this grant funds. It will ultimately help create more opportunities for people across the country. Congratulations to the team at Merrimack College that put together a strong application to bring this money from Congress home to Massachusetts,” Rep. Moulton said.

The project, entitled Financial, Academic, Social, and Mental Health Supports to Improve STEM Undergraduate Student Retention and Graduation, will study and support low-income students pursuing degrees in STEM at Merrimack College. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

The grant will fund financial aid and mental health resources for 20 students spaced over 3 groups. According to the project’s abstract, researchers will study the “complex interactions among financial, social, emotional, and mental health factors and their influences on STEM undergraduate student retention and academic success.”

Rickey Caldwell Jr., an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Merrimack College will lead the study.  The school will receive access to the funds, totaling $999,523, starting August 15th. The project is part of the larger Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program through the NSF. The program increases the number of students from low-income families pursuing and successfully completing degrees in STEM.
