OBITUARY: Priscilla M. Blatchford, 92

GLOUCESTER, MA — Priscilla B. (Mayo) Blatchford of Gloucester, widow of Howard P. Blatchford, Sr., died in Wilmington, Massachusetts on July 22, 2020 after a lengthy illness. She was 92 years old. 

She was born in Gloucester on February 13, 1928, the daughter of the late John W. Mayo and Selina B. (Pike) Mayo, both of whom had immigrated to Gloucester from Newfoundland. She attended Gloucester public schools and graduated from Gloucester High School in the Class of 1946. After high school, she worked in the business office of New England Telephone Co. in Gloucester before marrying and starting a family. She later worked for the Gloucester Public Schools in the school lunch program. 

For many years she was a member of the Independent Christian Church, Universalist, in Gloucester where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Judith Murray Guild. She was accomplished in music and in many arts and crafts, including sewing, knitting, quilting, as well as painting. She was interested in genealogy and researched the Blatchford family tree on Cape Ann back to the time the first ancestor arrived from England in the early 1700s. She was also a voracious reader and an avid Scrabble player. 

She is survived by two sons, Howard P. Blatchford, Jr. of Boston, and Charles M. Blatchford of Gloucester, two grandchildren, Thomas C. D. Blatchford of Boston and Eliza R. Valori, and her husband Nicholas, of Silver Spring, Maryland and two sisters, Vera L. Greene of Wauchula, Florida, and Margaret Ann Bragdon and her husband Richard, of Deming, New Mexico and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by another son, John B. Blatchford, and her brother, Charles L. Mayo. 

At her request, no services were held. Burial was at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in East Gloucester. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, 10 Church St., Gloucester MA 01930 or the Rose Baker Senior Center, 6 Manuel F. Lewis Street, Gloucester, MA 01930, or to the charity of one’s choice.
