Wilmington Police Patrol Officers Union Issues Statement Regarding Rally Set For August 16

Below is a statement from the Wilmington Police Patrol Officers Union regarding the planned Rally For President Trump & Law Enforcement set for Sunday, August 16, 2020 at 2pm on the Wilmington Town Common:

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Police Patrol Officers Union has been and continues to be very fortunate for the support and respect which our officers receive throughout the community. Wilmington is a special place filled with people of many different experiences and beliefs. Many of our officers grew up and/or still reside here. We respect our neighbors, friends and families and their differing opinions on all matters, whether they be political or not.

All residents of Wilmington are allowed and encouraged to have their own beliefs and ideas pertaining to any issue which they wish to weigh in on. Our membership, just like our community, does not fit a cookie-cutter mold and has many differing perspectives on issues both locally and nationally. As a Union and as a community we foster these differences, as they are the very basis of our Constitution and founding principles.

Within our community there has recently been divisiveness in regards to the planned pro-police and pro-President Trump rally on August 16th. This rally was created by residents of this town who came up with their own way of expressing their beliefs. There are many residents of this town who share those same beliefs and will wish to attend. There are many who support our police but do not support President Trump and will chose not to participate.

In either circumstance our members feel the support from our community every day. If your own personal beliefs lead you to show up at the rally then that is your choice. If your beliefs require that you do not participate that is your choice also. This Union does not and will never request or require anyone to compromise their own beliefs in order to show us support. If you feel that attending the rally goes against those beliefs, but that you still want to support police there is a way to do so: Treat each other with the same respect which you show us. Being kind, thoughtful and considerate to your fellow residents and understanding that differing views does not equate to differing teams, that we all want what is best for this community (even when we can’t agree on what’s best) is the best way to show you support our police and our officers.

  1. LOVE THE POLICE AND LOVE TRUMP. IT MIGHT BE HARD FOR ME TO MAKE IT THERE BUT I WANT YOU ALL TO KNOW YOU HAVE MY SUPPORT.
