Joan was born on October 20, 1932, in Lynn, MA; she was the dear daughter of the late Anthony and Anne (LeBlanc) Richards. Joan was raised and educated in Lynn and a graduate of Lynn Classical High School. Joan went on to further her education at Essex Agricultural Nursing School and soon after started a long and rewarding career as a nurse.
Joan took a nursing position at the Winthrop Hospital where she worked for many years. Her dedication and compassion to her patients as well as their families was unwavering; she cared for them as she would her own family. Joan retired from Winthrop Hospital and went to work at a few local area nursing homes to continue her care for others.
Joan married and moved to Swampscott, MA, where she raised her family; she was a devoted mother to Richard, Diane and Karl. Joan also had two beautiful granddaughters, Jennifer and Danielle and her great-grandson Anthony who loved her dearly.
Joan enjoyed many things in life; she was an amazing cook, an avid gardener and a very talented ballroom dancer; she just loved to dance and was elegant on the floor.
Joan was known to be a “snow bird” during the harsh New England winters; for many years she headed to Pompano Beach, Florida where she enjoyed the sun and fun and where she had a great group of friends. Following her retirement, Joan, was able to spend six months of the year at home in Revere and six months in Pompano Beach until her illness brought her back to the East Coast and closer to her family these last several years.
Joan will be fondly remembered for many things including her love of family, friends and animals. She was a hard worker, kind and compassionate to her patients. Joan had a heart of gold and will forever be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Joan was the devoted mother of Richard Cashman and his companion Joan of Swampscott, Diane McBay and her husband Fran of Wilmington and Karl Cashman of Pompano Beach, FL, “Nonnie” of Jennifer Parker, Danielle Perotti and “Great-Nonni” of Anthony Perrotti. Beloved companion of Al Graiver of Pompano Beach, FL, dear sister of the late Louis Richards, George Richards, Beatrice Small, Julie Row and Theresa Johnson. Joan was also very special to Kimberly McKinnon and her family and is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
Due to the current situation with Covid 19, the family has decided to have a private service at this time for Joan.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452.
