LETTER: Selectmen Chair Bendel Thanks Town Moderator Rob Peterson & All Those Involved In Successful Annual Town Meeting

Dear Editor,

I wanted to take a moment and thank all of the residents who attended this past Saturday’s annual Town Meeting. I would also like to thank each and every one of our town employees. Every single town department contributed to making this very unusual Town Meeting a successful and safe event for our residents. Many thanks to our community partners at WCTV for their continued efforts. There is no doubt that this was a Town Meeting like no other. A twice-delayed, end of June, outdoor, mid-pandemic, socially distant Town Meeting, that took much time and effort by many to pull off. Thank you to all of the volunteer boards and committee members who contributed as well. I appreciate your hundreds of hours over the course of nearly eight months to prepare articles for the residents to vote on. Some articles passed and some articles failed, but there were healthy and civil debates over many of the important issues that we face. I can’t help but feel proud of the fact that the tone of the meeting’s dialogue was much more respectful than what we are seeing elsewhere in our society today.

I would be remiss if I did not specifically thank our esteemed Town Moderator Rob Peterson. I have witnessed first-hand the amount of time and energy he has put into preparing for this year’s meeting. Once again, he helped the Town navigate through a very important democratic process despite being faced with the challenges of an unprecedented time in our history. His leadership and parliamentary procedure skills were on full display Saturday and I am grateful for his service. With the announcement of his decision not to seek reelection to the Moderator position, I know he will be sorely missed at the podium. I wish Rob and his young family good health and continued success.

For some it was their very first annual Town Meeting, for others it was their sixtieth Town Meeting, as was proudly pointed out towards the end of the meeting. Regardless, each of their voices were as equally important. I encourage all residents to get involved where they can as we move forward together. This meeting was the culmination of a lot of work done by a lot of people coming together. I am very grateful and extremely proud to be a small part of the team that we call the Town of Wilmington. I wish you all a very happy and healthy summer.

Thank you,

Greg Bendel
Chairman of the Wilmington Board of Selectmen
