2 SURVEYS TO TAKE: School District & Teachers Association Ask For Feedback As Planning For Next School Year Begins

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Public Schools and the Wilmington Teachers’ Association each recently issued separate surveys on the 2020-2021 school year and remote learning.

Below are their respective announcements;

Wilmington Public Schools Parent/Guardian Survey

The Wilmington Public Schools is committed to following the most up to date state and federal guidelines for safely reopening school. Assuming those are in place for the start of the school year, we are seeking to gather information from members of our community to help inform our efforts moving forward. If you could kindly take a moment to share with us your feedback by Tuesday, June 16, 2020 that would be greatly appreciated.

Wilmington Teachers’ Association Student/Family Survey

Last night, you received a communication from the WPS Superintendent of Schools which included a survey for parents/guardians. As with other aspects of our remote learning work this year, the Wilmington Teachers’ Association was given short notice of this survey’s existence, and classroom teachers and other educational support staff were not provided with an opportunity to offer feedback or alternative questions for inclusion prior to the survey being shared with families.

The “Wilmington Public Schools June 2020 Parent/Guardian Survey” reflects a biased assumption that classroom teachers were the sole delivery method for our district’s remote learning—a plan designed based on guidance from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and adjusted slightly through negotiations between the WPS administration and the WTA. The survey, much like our remote learning plan, was cobbled together by WPS administrators using the language drafted by DESE and other districts without consideration for the work actually being done in Wilmington’s remote classrooms or elements unique to our community’s experience.

Your child(ren)’s remote education did not rest exclusively on the shoulders of classroom teachers. Direction and communication from our building and district administrators, as well as the efforts of our dedicated educational support staff (including those who are not represented by the WTA) were left out of this survey. As such, we have developed our own survey for WPS families and ask that you take a few minutes to respond to the questions we would have included had our district looked at the big picture before sending their survey out to the community. As we do not have the option to send our survey out to the entire school community, please share this link with your friends and neighbors who also have children in our schools. We want to hear from everyone!

Thank you in advance for your help in providing a better understanding of your child(ren)’s experience with remote learning over the past few months. We look forward to reviewing your feedback.
