Below is a letter from Town Manager Jeff Hull & School Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand:
Dear Members of the Wilmington Community,
After careful review of the recent guidance issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and through consultation with local officials including Doreen Crowe (WPS Nursing Coordinator), Shari Parker (CARES Program Coordinator ), Ed Harrison (Interim Director of Athletics) Karen Campbell (Wilmington Recreation Director) and Shelly Newhouse (Health Director) we have collectively made the difficult decision to cancel most organized Wilmington sponsored youth programs this summer. As a result, there will not be any youth town recreation programs taking place in Wilmington school buildings, summer CARES programs or the summer athletic camps typically run at Wilmington High School. The exception to this is the Wilmington Public School’s Extended School Year Program & Services that will be operated remotely.
We recognize that this is difficult news to receive and will most certainly impact many of our families, but we believe that, based upon the guidance from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, this is the most appropriate course of action to take in the interest of the health and welfare of our children and those who work in the programs.
There are specific fundamental points of compliance that serve as requirements for the operation of summer programs in Massachusetts that are simply too difficult to comply with including the need to maintain social distancing, ensuring that there is no contact with or between children and the need to ensure that participants do not share equipment or materials.
We thank you for your understanding in these difficult times.
Jeffrey Hull, Town Manager
Glenn Brand, Superintendent of Schools
