SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS: “Hybrid” Graduation Proposal Announced, To Be Discussed At May 13 Meeting

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington School Committee meets this Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at 7pm via Zoom.

The School Committee will be discussing a “hybrid” graduation ceremony proposal for the WHS Class of 2020 on Sunday, June 7, 2020.

According to Principal Linda Peters, the virtual portion of the graduation would consist of a pre-recorded program similar to the traditional ceremony. All speeches — student speeches and speeches by the Town Manager, School Committee Chair, Superintendent, and High School Principal — would be pre-recorded and sent to WCTV. The Assistant Principals would announce the name of each graduate and WCTV would display a picture of that senior.

The in-person portion of the graduation would involve each family driving to the High School at assigned times to receive the diplomas from Principal Peters with teachers lining the route by which the parade of cars would enter and exit.

Organizers will also plan a date in early August for a traditional ceremony if social distancing restrictions are lifted. The ceremony would feature a shortened program with just graduates and parents in attendance.

There are some other newsworthy items on the agenda, including:

  • Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand will provide a COVID-19 update.
  • Dr. Brand will provide an update on the Assistant Superintendent search.
  • Dr. Brand will provide an update on his 2019-2020 performance goals. The School Committee will conduct their evaluation of him in June.
  • The School Committee will vote on a price increase for school lunches for next school year.
  • The School Committee will approve a donation of $5,204.70 from the Wilmington Educational Foundation in the form of curriculum grants.
  • The School Committee will review various proposed policy changes.

The School Committee will meet in Executive Session (closed to the public) prior to the meeting to discuss collective bargaining.

The meeting will be telecast live by Wilmington Community Television on WCTV — Channel 9 on Comcast and Channel 37 on Verizon.  The meeting will also be streamed on WCTV’s website HERE.
