POSITIVE NEWS: Wilmington Cheerleaders Hold Parade For Legendary Cheer Coach Battling Cancer (with VIDEO)

WILMINGTON, MA — On Sunday, April 5, 2020, members of the Wilmington cheerleading community came together — while socially distancing — to show support for their leader Deb Smith, who is battling cancer.

Escorted by the Wilmington Police Department and Wilmington Fire Department, 40 cars filled with cheerleaders from the Wilmington Pop Warner B & D Teams and Wilmington High School Team paraded by Coach Deb Smith’s house. Many of the girls held posters (and trophies) out vehicle windows yelling messages of support as Smith waved on.

“This is what this town is all about — coming together during difficult times. It’s truly amazing,” said cheer mom Krystle Lee, who brought this story to Wilmington Apple‘s attention. “Deb Smith has been a cheer coach and mentor in this town for many years. She is currently battling cancer. These girls and their families rallied together to show her and her family how much she is missed and how much support she has in the community.”

Smith, a mother of five and grandmother of three, has volunteered for Wilmington Pop Warner for more than 20 years.  While President, she organized and oversaw the football program while remaining a cheerleading coach.  Her coaching career is expansive — from pop warner to high school to college to East Celebrity Elite.  She’s led squads to numerous league, conference, regional and national championships.

Smith received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pop Warner Football Conference of Eastern Massachusetts three years ago.

“Deb has dedicated her life to improving the lives of children and being an outstanding coach, mentor, mother, grandmother, and friend,” read her Lifetime Achievement Award announcement. “She’s been an inspiration, a role model, and an invaluable asset to pop warner, having touched so many lives, both children and adults.”
