VIDEO: Meet Nancy Zimmer, Owner Of ‘The Crafting Closet,’ Who Is Leading An Effort To Sew Masks For Healthcare Workers

WILMINGTON, MA — Watch the latest episode of “Talk of the Town” with WCTV’s Lisa Kapala featuring quick stories from around town.

In this episode, Kapala remotely interviews Nancy Zimmer, owner of The Crafting Closet (1 Church Street, Unit #103).

Zimmer has been busy putting together sewing kits for residents so they can sew masks for healthcare workers. Zimmer, who is more of a knitter and crocheter, saws sewing isn’t her specialty, but she had the supplies and wanted to help after reading about calls for masks from hospitals.

Zimmer explains how she put the mask kits together, and notes that these aren’t N-95 masks that can ensure absolute safety from the COVID-19 virus. She adds that different hospitals want masks with different materials.

Each kit has enough material to make 14-18 masks and is available free of charge. There is a bin for pick-up and drop-off inside Zimmer’s building, but outside its front door. To date, she’s given away more than 60 kits, which can make more than a thousand masks. Zimmer notes requests for masks has been overwhelming and while some hospitals have stopped requesting homemade masks, their nurses continue to beg for them.

Zimmer is currently looking for donations of flannel, t-shirt material and elastics for future mask kits. Donations can be brought to the store.
