WILMINGTON, MA — At what’s believed to be the first remote meeting in the history of the board, Selectmen last night unanimously postponed the Annual Town Election, originally scheduled for April 25, 2020, to an undetermined date.
Selectmen also supported Town Moderator Rob Peterson’s decision to postpone the Annual Town Meeting from May 2, 2020 to May 30, 2020.
“It is important for us to be proactive in our approach and to let the citizens know where we stand on Town Meeting,” said Peterson. “What we’re dealing with is uncharted. We’re now taking steps to make sure folks in Wilmington know where we are and what we’re going to do.”
“There’s a very real possible that Town Meeting is again postponed to June,” Peterson later added. “We’ll be as proactive as possible to get the meeting date, time and location out to residents.”
Peterson noted he made the decision to postpone Town Meeting — after recent legislation gave the town the ability to delay by 30 days — in consultation with the Board of Selectmen Chair, Finance Committee Chair, Town Manager, Town Counsel, Town Clerk, Planning Director, Health Director, and public safety officials. He praised Town Counsel Mark Rich’s legal guidance during this unprecedented period.
Whether the Town Election comes before or after the Town Meeting remains an open question.
“We’re in untested waters…. but there will absolutely be a town election,” assured Town Clerk Tina Touma-Conway. She noted, according to current law, the election must be held before June 30, 2020 and residents must be given at least 20 days notice.
There are no contested races on this year’s Town Election ballot. In response to a joke from Selectwoman Jomarie O’Mahony during last night’s meeting, Selectman Mike McCoy said he would be sticking with his decision not to seek re-election and won’t be running any sort of write-in campaign.
