Below is a press release from the Wilmington Board of Health:
WILMINGTON, MA — This notice serves to provide the community with an update regarding the Governor Baker’s recent declaration of a State of Emergency in Massachusetts due to the Coronavirus (COVID 19) outbreak and the measures that the Town of Wilmington plans to implement as it relates to these concerns.
At the present time the Board of Health is quarantining 3 individuals in Wilmington. Over the last week the Town and school leadership has been working closely in an effort to plan accordingly and be proactive in trying to ensure that our schools and whole community remain safe. This decision was discussed and made collaboratively by our Town leaders. We are hoping that these actions can slow the potential spread and possibly reduce the impact of COVID-19 in Wilmington.
If a COVID-19 outbreak occurs in our community, the virus could last for a significant duration (An outbreak is when a large number of people suddenly become sick.) Based on several factors the Town of Wilmington has decided to cancel large non-essential community based events for the next 30 days. These events could happen at the Wilmington Memorial Library, Buzzell Senior Center, Recreation Dept and in all our public schools. Essential town meetings will still be conducted at this time. Schools have been closed today 3/12/20.
Older adults and those individuals with compromised immune systems are our most at risk populations. We are urging those to avoid large crowds and events. Individuals who live in households with vulnerable people, such as elderly parents, should also consider avoiding crowds.
We trust that you recognize that these decisions, while difficult, are believed to be prudent in these circumstances and underscore our commitment in trying to ensure the health and well-being of our whole community.
What can we do?
Continue to promote everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, which include:
- Stay home when you are sick, except to get medical care.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going
to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. - Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Clean frequently touched surfaces and objects daily.
