WILMINGTON, MA — Pantaleone Anthony Mercurio, fondly known as “Sonny” to his family and friends, age 86, of Wilmington, formerly of Somerville and the North End of Boston, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on February 27, 2020.
Sonny was born in Boston, MA on May 31, 1933; he was the dear son of the late Demetrio and Eda (Ciriello) Mercurio. Sonny was raised and educated in the North End of Boston and was part of a large and loving Italian family. Sonny also spend many wonderful times at his grandparent’s farm which was located “up country” on Shawsheen Ave. in Wilmington, MA. Sonny loved being at the farm with his family and extended family; he enjoyed learning how to grow vegetables and flowers, spend time with the animals and looked forward to his outings with his grandfather at Silver Lake where he would ride his horse and cool off in the spring fed waters.
In July of 1951, Sonny, enlisted in the United States Army Reserves; throughout the years he went through many different training skills and worked his way up the ranks. Sonny was a member of the 211 Artillery Group (Air Defense) and at the time of his Honorable Discharge in November of 1959 he had earned the rank of Sergeant.
For many years, Sonny, worked as a draftsman for the Polaroid Company where he made many life-long friends.
While at a dance at the Club of St. Anthony’s in Boston more than 65 years ago, Sonny met the “love of his life” Irene Barrasso. The couple soon became inseparable and were married on May 12, 1957 at St. Anne’s Church in Somerville. Sonny and Irene lived in Somerville for many years and that’s where they their raised four wonderful sons; Michael, Stephen, David and Marc. Family was everything to Sonny; he was a devoted and loving husband, father, son, brother and uncle but nothing compared to his role as “Papa” to his beautiful granddaughters Samantha, Isabella and Stephanie who he just adored. Sonny treasured his role as “Papa”; there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for “his girls”. When their sons were grown, Sonny and Irene decided to move to Wilmington permanently more than 29 years ago. Sonny and Irene, along with their family and friends had many great times together throughout the years before his illness forced him to slow down.
Sonny was a good athlete throughout his life; he had a passion for playing softball and was an incredible “fast pitcher”. Sonny also enjoyed competitive bowling and picked up golfing in his later years. Sonny also loved following his favorite Boston Sports teams and was thrilled to watch “his Patriots” win their Superbowl titles as well as the Red Sox win their World Series games.
Sonny will be fondly remembered as a “nice guy”; he was kind, caring and loving towards his family, friends and neighbors. Sonny will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Sonny was the beloved husband of 62 years to Irene (Barrasso) Mercurio, devoted father of Michael Mercurio of Wilmington, Stephen Mercurio and his wife Annette of Winchester, David Mercurio and his wife Jill of Tewksbury and Marc Mercurio and his wife Amy of Bel Air, MD. Loving “Papa” of Samantha, Isabella and Stephanie Mercurio. Cherished son of the late Demetrio and Eda Mercurio, dear brother of Marlene Feloni of Somerville, the late Demetrio “Junior” Mercurio and the late Dennis Mercurio. Sonny is also survived by his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
