WILMINGTON, MA – Diane Frances Martin, age 70, formerly of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2020, at the Newton Wellesley Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
Diane was born on November 6, 1949, in Reading, Pennsylvania; she was the daughter of the late Peter George Martin and Frances Mary (Machiesky) Martin. She graduated from Wilmington High School, then graduated second in her class at Fisher Junior College. Following the birth of her cherished son, Michael, Diane returned to the University of Massachusetts in Lowell to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology; graduating at Salutatorian.
Diane worked as a social worker for many years after receiving her degree in psychology; she immensely enjoyed helping homeless women and children find permanent housing. She later worked in publishing until her retirement, which coincided with her love of books. Diane was also an avid traveler; she traveled throughout Europe, yet her favorite trip was to the Holy Land with her dear friend, David. She also took religious pilgrimages to Mexico and to Medjugorje in Bosnia. Diane was know for her infectious laugh, great sense of humor and intellect. Diane would say that the best part of her life was raising her son and spending time with her nieces and nephews.
Diane was the devoted mother of Michael Peter Marin of New York City, NY, she was the beloved sister of five siblings; Robert P. Martin and his wife Ondis, and their two children, Michael and Peter all of the Philippines, Mary Ann Marks of Lowell, Thomas A. Martin and his wife Marylee of Derry, NH, Theresa M. Gilbride and her late husband Thomas, and their daughter Elizabeth of Lowell and Katherine M. Martin of Lowell. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly; Anthony Marks and his wife Neia and their two children Victor and Ricardo, of Peabody, Thomas A. Marks and his wife Rachel, and their two children, Evey and Nathaniel of Louisville, Kentucky; Jessica Diebold and her husband Mathieu, and their son, Simon, of Media, Pennsylvania.
Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Saturday, January 18th at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA, at 11:00 a.m. Visiting Hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, January 17th from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
