SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS: WHS Senior Suketh Sivakumar Receives Superintendent’s Academic Excellence Award

WILMINGTON, MA — At last week’s School Committee Meeting, Wilmington High School senior Sukethram “Suketh” Sivakumar received the 2019-2020 Superintendent’s Academic Excellence Award.

The Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents sponsors this award each year at every public high school in the state. The selection of this award is typically made in the fall, allowing the selected student to include this honor in their college applications.

“The Academic Excellence Award is intended to be given to senior high school students who have distinguished themselves in the pursuit of excellence during their high school careers. Selection is based on: three year cumulative average, rank in class, and personal selection by the Superintendent,” announced Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand.

“Suketh’s academic performance has ranked him at the top of his graduating class. He has consistently pursued rigorous courses, including a total of TEN AP courses, 5 of which he’s taking in his senior year,” continued Brand. “Suketh’s impressive academic achievement is complemented by an extensive schedule of extracurricular activities. He is a member of the Marching Band, along with Varsity Track, Varsity Wrestling, National Honor Society, and Medical Careers Club. He currently serves as President of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).”

“Beyond WHS, Suketh earned the rank of Eagle Scout and completed a project in which he installed Bleeding Control Kits in all Wilmington schools. This project, along with his many hours of volunteering at Lowell General Hospital and the Medford Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, have been driven by his interest in a future career in medicine,” added Brand. “In his free time, Suketh enjoys his job at Extreme Craze in Woburn.”

“Thank you so much for this award. It means a lot to me,” said Suketh. “I want to give a special thanks to my parents who helped me through a lot of this. They’ve always been there for me. And to the staff… for helping me throughout my high school career.”
