SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS: 4th Annual Wilmington Special Olympics Unified Games Day Set For May 4, 2020

WILMINGTON, MA — At last week’s School Committee Meeting, Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand announced that the 4th Annual Wilmington Special Olympics Unified Games Day will be held on Monday, May 4, 2020, with a rain date of Monday, May 11, 2020, at the Wilmington High School Alumni Staidum.

“I had the great pleasure last year to come to learn about the history and wide-scale community participation in this wonderful event,” said Brand. “It is such an honor for Wilmington to be a part of. Myself, members of the staff, and the community look forward to this again coming up in May.”

This joyful and memorable event features students from each Wilmington school in a Unified Sports setting — a setting which allows for both students with and without intellectual disabilities to participate side-by-side in a truly inclusive setting.

Each student will participate in at least sport skills stations or track and field events led by student leaders and volunteers from Wilmington High School. All participating students will be awarded for their accomplishments.

The Games will begin at 9am with the Law Enforcement Torch Run where local law enforcement officers will escort the Flame of Hope, carried by one of our special olympic athletes, onto the field to kick off the opening ceremony.

More details about the event will be shared with the community as the date approaches. Follow the Wilmington Special Olympics School Day Games on Facebook for more information and to learn how you can help. The public is invited to attend on May 4.
