5 Things To Do In Wilmington On Friday, October 25, 2019

WILMINGTON, MA — Below are 5 things to do in Wilmington on Friday, October 25, 2019:

#1) Say THANK YOU to Barbara Mette

WILMINGTON, MA — After 45 years of teaching in Wilmington, WHS Band Director Barbara Mette is retiring at the end of this school year.

Her final regular season home football game is coming up Friday, October 25, 2019.

“She doesn’t want a party or a big to-do… BUT… we thought it would be amazing if anyone who could come to the game would come and say hello!,” wrote colleague Julie Kelley in an announcement on social media. “A ‘parade’ of current and former ‘band geeks’ saying hello to an amazing educator would mean so much to her…. Let’s get the gang there to say ‘happy retirement!'”

Kelley will also have a book for people to sign at the game. If you’d like to sign the book but cannot attend the game, the book will be left in the high school’s Main Office during each school day leading up to October 25.

For those who cannot attend the game in person, Kelley encourages all former band members, color guard, band parents, and former teaching colleagues to send a short video message (please include your name and year of graduation in the video) HERE. Folks are also encouraged to submit photos of themselves and Ms. Mette from “back in the day” using the same link.

#2) DEADLINE: Economic Development Committee Survey

The Wilmington Economic Development Committee (WEDC) is the pro-active arm on behalf of the Town of Wilmington to promote healthy, balanced, sustainable economic development.

The WEDC seeks your short response on Why Wilmington? Answers should be kept to a maximum of one sentence and the question is open-ended intentionally.

Click HERE to provide your short response.

The WEDC will evaluate survey responses during our next meeting — Wednesday, October 30, 2019 — as we weigh Wilmington in a big picture approach. The form will close on October 25, 2019. Thank you for your time!

#3) DEADLINE: Wilmington Senior Citizen Work Program

The Senior Citizen Work Program offers Wilmington residents the opportunity to work off a portion of their property tax by working part-time for the Town. This year’s program will enable the Town to fill a minimum of 20 positions in various school and municipal departments. Participants earn $11 an hour for up to 80 hours of “volunteer” service. Since the program’s beginning in 1995, approximately 452 positions have been filled.

The purpose of the program is to assist seniors in reducing their property tax burden. Participants MUST be Wilmington residents occupying a house for which property taxes are paid (or spouse of homeowner), have limited financial resources and be 60 years of age or older as of January 1, 2020. Applications are available in the Town Manager’s Office and at the Buzzell Senior Center. This year’s application deadline is October 25, 2019.

As in past years, priority will be given to qualified applicants not previously selected for the program. All seniors, regardless of past participation however, are encouraged to apply. Job listings and program information are on the application.
