Below is a press release from Wilmington High School:

WILMINGTON, MA — Principal of Wilmington High School, Linda Peters, announced today that Evelyn Miller-Nuzzo, Leah Nelson, and Sukethram Sivakumar, members of the class of 2020, have been named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. Letters of Commendation from the school and National Merit Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, were presented to the students by Dr. Brand, Ms. Peters and their school counselors, Mrs. Laura Caggiano and Ms. Mollie Dickerson.

Evelyn (Evy) Miller-Nuzzo’s contributions to the Wilmington High School community, both in and out of the classroom, have allowed her to shine as a member of the Class of 2020. As a student, she has pursued a rigorous curriculum consisting of Advanced Placement and Honors level courses and is ranked 2nd in her graduating class. A four year member of the Winter & Spring Track teams, Evy has been a state medalist, Middlesex League All-Star, team MVP, and honored with the Coaches’ Award. Additionally she was selected as Captain in her junior year and will serve in this role again as a senior. Evy is also the President of the Rotary Interact Club, heading up a group of students who serve the community with their volunteer efforts and a member of the Freshman Mentor Program at WHS. Outside of school, Evy is always looking for ways to contribute as well and during the summer prior to her junior year, she traveled to Costa Rica with Global Leadership Adventures where she helped to build a playground for underprivileged children. In addition to her honor as a Commended Scholar, Evy was also recognized through the National Hispanic Scholars program as well.

Leah Nelson stands out amongst the Class of 2020 for her many talents as a student, artist, musician, and engineer. Over the past four years she has maintained an A average in her courses while pursuing a rigorous program of study consisting of Honors and Advanced Placement classes. A member of the Wildcat Band since 4th grade, Leah plays 1st clarinet in the ensemble and is actively involved on the band’s executive board. She has served as Creative Lead for the Robotics Club and this year is the Engineering Notebook Lead, participates in Best Buddies Club, and has performed numerous hours of community service with the Local Heroes Club. However, Leah’s greatest passion is her art; she has devoted much of her time to independent art study and has already received commissions for her work including portraits, fliers, and digital paintings she has created. Her work has been featured in the annual Art Show, which she assists with, and her teachers have recognized her efforts with an Academic Achievement award in Visual Arts. Leah plans to pursue study in Concept Art/Entertainment & Game Art next year and aspires to be an Art Director for a major studio one day.

Sukethram (Suketh) Sivakumar’s academic performance has ranked him at the top of his graduating class. He has consistently pursued rigorous courses, including a total of 10 AP courses, 5 of which he’s taking in his senior year. Suketh’s impressive academic achievement is complemented by an extensive schedule of extracurricular activities. He is a member of the Marching Band, along with Varsity Track, Varsity Wrestling, National Honor Society, and Medical Careers Club. He currently serves as President of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). Beyond WHS, Suketh earned the rank of Eagle Scout and completed a project in which he installed Bleeding Control Kits in all Wilmington schools. This project, along with his many hours of volunteering at Lowell General Hospital and the Medford Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, have been driven by his interest in a future career in medicine. In his free time, he enjoys his job at Xtreme Craze in Woburn.

Commended students place among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
