Wilmington-Based Merrimack Valley A Cappella Chorus Members To Compete In International Singing Competition

Below is a press release from the Wilmington-based Merrimack Valley A Cappella Chorus, which rehearses at the Wilmington Arts Center every Thursday night:

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Select members of Merrimack Valley A Cappella Chorus will compete as members of Harmony On The Sound Chorus (from Trumbull, CT) in Sweet Adelines International Competition in New Orleans, on Thursday, September 19, 2019!

Harmony On the Sound Chorus, Directed by Karen Sweeters, will compete around 4:45 pm, Central Time (5:45 pm, Eastern), during the second session of the Chorus Semifinals. The entire competition runs all week, and can be viewed at http://sweetadswebcast.com/

In 2018, after Harmony On The Sound (HOTS) qualified for International competition, they generously invited other area chorus members to audition and join them on the International Stage in New Orleans. Many members of Merrimack Valley A Cappella Chorus jumped at the opportunity, including Director Eileen Gioe and Assistant Director, Sally Jeffery.

Other MVA members who will be competing on the International stage include: Beverly Barteaux, Betsy Colburn, Beth Ducot, Lin Grady, Linda Green, Gina Hubbard, An-Chian Kao, Diane Kelley, Christina Miner, Kate Harrington Ravenelle, Kate Roberts and Marybeth Webster.

“It is like a dream come true. Like a dream you didn’t think would come true, but it did,” says Lin Grady, who will sing the Bass part in the competition. This is the first International experience for many of these members, except for Gina Hubbard and Sally Jeffery. Merrimack Valley A Cappella Chorus would like to wish Harmony On The Sound Chorus, and all Region 1 Quartets and Choruses, the VERY BEST!

The members of MVA and other choruses who joined HOTS for this contest season were dubbed the NOTS. As the competition neared and unity was obvious, Karen Sweeters declared, “There are no HOTS or NOTS. Only HNOTS.”

Sweet Adelines International Contest is a formal competition. Choruses compete from all over the world. Judges carefully evaluate each chorus’ performance in four categories: sound, music, expression and showmanship.

The Sweet Adelines program for this competition is available online.
