OBITUARY: Ruth M. (Dole) Lyman, 83

WILMINGTON, MA — Ruth M. Lyman (Dole), age 83, of Wilmington, formerly of Charlestown, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2019, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington.

Ruth was born on February 28, 1936, in Somerville, MA; she was the dear daughter of the late Warren and Hannah Dole. Ruth was raised and educated in Charlestown and went to Matignon High School in Cambridge. Ruth was a true “Townie” who never forgot her roots; she made many life-long girlfriends growing up in Charlestown and they stayed extremely close throughout the years. Ruth and her friends were devoted to one another; they raised their families together, vacationed, traveled together and they spent many happy times together in Florida throughout their later years.

Ruth married the “love of her life,” Paul Lyman over 66 years ago. Ruth and Paul moved to “Suncrest Acres” in Wilmington in 1961; this was a great neighborhood to raise their seven children. Ruth and Paul were very close to their neighbors they were like one big extended family. Ruth’s unconditional love and devotion to her family was unwavering; she always made time for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren no matter what they were doing. Ruth attended countless school and sporting events; she was their biggest fan. Ruth even scoured the local newspaper for clippings of her families accomplishments and hung them on her “wall of fame” at home; this was an honor if you made her wall. Ruth made her home warm and welcoming; she adored her children, grandchildren, in-laws, extended family and friends. Ruth made lots of memories through the years; she made her holiday’s special and threw great Christmas Eve parties that will be treasured memories.

In 1967, Ruth and Paul opened their first drug store, The Village Apothecary in Billerica and a legacy was born. They ran their business as a “true old fashioned family business” with a huge family atmosphere; everyone was involved, family and friends alike. Ruth was a meticulous bookkeeper; she had everything in the store organized and accounted for; she was excellent at her job. Ruth was very friendly and helpful with her customer’s; she was certainly one of the main reasons that the business was so successful for more than 30 years. In the mid 1980’s, Ruth and Paul decided to expand their venture when their son Chris decided to join the profession and bought Kristal Pharmacy in the Lucci’s Plaza in Wilmington; they re-named the store The Village Apothecary II. Ruth, Paul and Chris soon added their personal touches and their welcoming personalities to the store which led them to become a popular “home town drug store.” After many years of serving the community, Ruth, retired in 1994.

Ruth will be fondly remembered as a wonderful woman; she was kind, thoughtful and very loving. Ruth truly enjoyed her family and friends and she loved them with all her heart. She was “quite a lady” who will forever be in the hearts of those she touched.
