SWEDEN — On July 25, 2019, Rita Casper, Director of Nursing Services from Andover Public Schools; Doreen Crowe, Director of Nursing Services from Wilmington Public Schools; Cathy Riccio, Director of Nursing Services from Newburyport Public Schools; and Shanyn Toulouse, Regional School Nurse Consultant from Haverhill Public Schools presented “The Role of the School Nurse in Substance Use Prevention in MA, USA” during the 2019 School Nurse International Conference in Sweden. The program was well received by the global audience and sparked a variety of questions from School Nurses from 24 participating countries.
Mrs. Casper introduced the presenting group and briefly explained the Opioid issue facing our country. Mrs. Riccio led the presentation with data on the Opioid Epidemic in the United States and shared the MA timeline for combating the issue and spotlighted the role of the School Nurse in substance use prevention. Mrs. Crowe explained how her district was an early adopter implementing Screening Brief Intervention & Referral for Treatment, a universal population-based health screening for middle & high school students. Mrs. Toulouse discussed how the screening incorporates all 4 standards of practice by demonstrating leadership in School Nursing, Care Coordination for screenings and referrals, implementing population-based health and performing data collection. These standards of practice are based on the National School Nurse Organization’s (NASN) 21st Century Framework for School Nursing Practice. She also spoke about the important role of the professional School Nurse advocating and supporting students to succeed academically.
