Greg Bendel Announces He’s Stepping Down As Head Coach Of Shawsheen Tech’s Boys Varsity Basketball Team

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington’s Greg Bendel announced Friday he was stepping down as Head Coach of the Shawsheen Tech’s Boys Varsity Basketball Team.

“Recently, I informed our Athletic Director that I have made the very difficult decision not to apply for the Head Basketball Coaching job for next season,” wrote Bendel in his announcement. “I have decided that now is the right time for me to spend more time with my two young children.”

Bendel was coming off arguably the best coaching performance of his career, leading the Rams to a 17-3 record and a share of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference (CAC) Large School championship. Bendel was named the 2018-2019 CAC Coach of the Year.

“I have enjoyed the past fifteen years as a basketball coach here at Shawsheen more than words can describe,” continued Bendel. “It has been one of the highlights of my life to serve as the Head Basketball Coach of the school where I was once a four-year player, but now is the right time for me to step away from coaching for awhile.”

Bendel is thankful to Athletic Director Al Costabile; former head coach Bob Hodnett; assistant coaches Joe Gore, Larry Bradley, Joel Mignault, and Matt Bruno; and the alumni for their support.

“Most importantly, I would like to thank all the kids that I have had the privilege to coach over the past fifteen years,” wrote Bendel. “I am so proud of you all and I can’t thank you enough for making me a better person. I’m forever grateful for the relationships we have formed over the years and I know that they will continue.”

Bendel will be replaced by assistant coach Joe Gore, whom Bendel called “one of the greatest players in Shawsheen Basketball history and an even better coach.”

“I stand ready to support him in anyway that I can, and I look forward to all his future successes,” added Bendel. “I urge everyone in the Shawsheen community to join me in supporting our new coach.”

“I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have served as coach at such a great school,” stressed Bendel. “It has truly been an honor. Go Rams!”
