Wilmington Public Schools Receives $13,000 Grant To Combat Vaping At High School & Middle School

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Public Schools has been awarded a $13,000 grant to support efforts to combat vaping at the Middle School and High School.

The grant was awarded by Community Health Network Area 15, commonly referred to as CHNA 15, a partnership between the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, hospitals, service agencies, schools, businesses, boards of health, non-profit organizations, and citizens working together to improve the health of their communities.

The district’s Vaping Committee applied for CHNA 15’s collaborative grant in April to help fund its “Wilmington E-Cigarette Education and Policy Initiative.”

The initiative has three main objectives:

  • To provide additional educational supports for various Wilmington constituent groups
  • To institute proactive alternatives to disciplinary infractions and subsequently coincide with disciplinary policy changes through student handbooks in the Middle School and High School
  • To introduce technological supports to assist school staff in efforts of positive enforcement of e-cigiarette use on school properties

“With collaboration between Wilmington Public Schools, Wilmington Police Department, and the Wilmington Substance Abuse Coalition, we are eager to continue to work together to address the ongoing concerns around youth vaping in our community,” a statement from the Committee reads. “We are very appreciate of the CHNA 15 team’s consideration of our project, as the funds made available will help support the vaping committee efforts and goals.”

The Committee consists of WMS Assistant Principal Jeanette Quirk; Coordinator of Behavioral Services Christine Murray; WHS Assistant Principal Christopher Phillips; WPD Health & Recovery Coordinator Samantha Reif; Director of Nursing Services Doreen Crowe; WHS student representative Jocelyn White; and WHS student representative Patrick O’Mahony.
