WHS SOFTBALL: Wildcats Defeat Greater Lowell Tech & Stoneham, Qualify For State Tournament

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Varsity Softball team (10-5) defeated Greater Lowell Tech by a score of 9-2 on Monday, May 20, 2019. With the win, the Wildcats qualified for the State Tournament.

In the top of the second inning, Wilmington scored two runs without getting a hit. The Wildcats did not get their first hit of the game until the fourth inning when Bella Kieran (3-4, RBI, run scored) doubled to left. The Wildcats’ bats exploded for 11 more hits and 7 more runs.

Jenna Sweeney and Gianna Brunetto each went 2-4 as well as scoring twice. Sweeney also had a stolen base.  Ally Moran went 1-3 (double, sac fly, 2 RBI). Ryan Bailey and Kayla Bourrell each registered an RBI. Kacie Bourrell had 2 RBI’s in the win.

Pitcher Ally Moran did not have her usual control, but she once again registered double digit strikeouts (10), striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh while giving up 5 hits.

“It was great to see our bats come alive today,” said coach Audrey Cabral. “We have been in a long slump and frustration was really setting in… Even when we didn’t reach base on a hit, our hitting mechanics/approach was much better than it has been in a long while.”

The Wilmington High School Varsity Softball team (11-5) defeated Stoneham High by a score of 9-0 on Tuesday, May 21, 2019.

All of the team’s seniors had an impact on Senior Night. Senior pitcher Ally Moran went the distance striking out 12 while allowing only 2 hits. Senior center fielder, Ryan Bailey (1-3 with a triple) reached base 3 times and scored 3 runs. Senior shortstop Kayla Bourrell went 2-3 and had 2 RBI’s. She also scored 2 runs.  Senior right fielder Gianna Brunetto went 1-3 with an RBI.  Senior left fielder Kacie Bourrell reached base twice on base on balls.

Bella Kieran continued her hot hitting with a 2-3 night (triple) and 3 big RBI’s. Chase Andersen had two stolen base. Kiara Nadeau came in to pinch hit in the top of the sixth and registered her first varsity hit.
