WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School Varsity Softball team (6-3) defeated Lexington by a score of 4-2 on Thursday, May 9, 2019.
The Wildcats did not score until the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, lead off batter Jenna Sweeney singled. Ashley Crawford doubled her home for the first run of the game. Ally Moran earned an RBI with a single plating Crawford.
In top of fourth inning, Lexington got one back when their lead off batter doubled, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a successful suicide squeeze. Ashley Crawford came up big today when she threw out the first of two runners trying to steal second.
In the top of the fifth inning, Jenna Sweeney made a nice put out tagging a base runner who turned the wrong way on an infield error.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wildcats scored another run when shortstop Kayla Bourrell led off with a single. She was able to score all way from first on an error on Kacie Bourrell bunt.
The Wildcats got another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Bella Kieran led off with a single. Ryan Bailey executed the short game very nicely by dropping down an excellent sacrifice bunt moving Kieran to second. Chase Andersen hit the ball well but right at the left fielder. Cassidy Ross (running for Kieran) was able to advance to third on an errant throw back to the infield. Kayla Bourrell got herself an RBI with single to center.
Ally Moran again went the distance striking out 11 while not allowing one base on balls.
“Today we made the plays that we needed to make,” said Coach Audrey Cabral. “We threw out two runners who tried to steal and our outfielders made very close plays on runners trying to advance. We also played much better defensively today.”
