SELECTMEN NEWS: Committee To Explore Town Ice Rink Options Begins To Take Shape

WILMINGTON, MA — At last week’s Selectmen Meeting, Town Manager Jeff Hull updated the board on progress he has made in establishing a committee to review options to provide an ice rink for the Town of Wilmington.

Hull identified a number of individuals, town departments and boards he would like to appoint to the committee, including:

  • Member of the Board of Selectmen: TBD
  • Member of the Finance Committee: TBD
  • George Hooper, Public Buildings Superintendent and Permanent Building Committee member
  • Karen Campbell, Recreation Director
  • Member of the Town Finance Department: TBD
  • Resident: Dan Ardito
  • Resident: Robert Peterson Jr.
  • Wilmington Youth Hockey President: Scott Audette
  • Tim Alberts, WHS Athletics Director, or Paul Ruggiero, Assistant Superintendent

The Wilmington Skating Club was invited to designate a member to serve on the committee, but declined.

Committee appointments will be formalized in May. The Committee is expected to begin meeting in June.

“I would really like to be on that Committee [as the Selectmen’s designee],” said Selectman Mike McCoy. “The town does deserve a hockey rink. I’m in favor of it and I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that happens because it’s long overdue. We need to make a wrong a right.”

Selectman Chair Kevin Caira opted to hold off and designate a member of the Board in May, once the board’s vacant seat was filled.

Selectmen approved the formation of the Town Ice Rink Committee earlier this month on the suggestion of Caira.

“We want to make sure the youth of Wilmington have a place…, whether it’s the Wilmington Figure Skating Club, Wilmington Youth Hockey, or the Wilmington High School hockey teams,” explained  Selectman Chair Kevin Caira. “This committee [will] review and look over options that are possibly out there for us.”
